Last night, I saw New York Times writer William Grimes’ essay in the Critic’s Notebook column on the phenomenon of the memoir pop up in my NYT feed. He writes, “The memoir has been on the march for more than a decade now. … But the genre has become so inclusive that it’s almost impossible to imagine which life experiences do not qualify as memoir material.”

As a blogger, I understand the attraction to writing memoirs. If given the chance, I could wax on about myself, my memories, and my revelations for quite some time. The nice thing about memoirs is that they don’t require much research or imagination. You were there – you know what happened. Of course, this means that it would be very easy to assume that anyone could write a memoir. While this is true, it does not also equate that anyone can write a good memoir, which goes for bloggers, as well. Grimes does not come out and explicitly state this in his essay, but the tone could imply it.

Grimes concludes with the thought that this propensity for penning memoirs might be a part of our humanity. He writes,

“John Eakin, an emeritus professor of English at Indiana University, has argued that human beings continuously engage in a process of self-creation and self-discovery by constructing autobiographical narratives. In a sense, we are the stories – multiple, shifting and constantly evolving – that we weave about ourselves, and this storytelling urge may even be hard-wired.”

Perhaps it is our super-ego and id fighting to dominate that causes us to want to share our life stories in a public setting? Ah, I never cared much for Freud, anyway.

ex libris

I finally read Anne Fadiman’s book Ex Libris this weekend. It has been on my wishlist for a year and on my bookshelf for about six months. It’s a slim paperback of 162 pages, but like most non-fiction, it took me three sittings to make my way through it. Most of the essays come from … Continue reading “ex libris”

I finally read Anne Fadiman’s book Ex Libris this weekend. It has been on my wishlist for a year and on my bookshelf for about six months. It’s a slim paperback of 162 pages, but like most non-fiction, it took me three sittings to make my way through it. Most of the essays come from her column “The Common Reader” in the Library of Congress’ publication Civilization, and they are personal stories about her experiences with books and reading.

bloglines irony

You’d think that a feed agregator would have a feed for its own newsletter.

Bloglines has announced that they have a new newsletter to “help inform you and provide a glimpse into the different ways people are using the service.” I found great irony in the following paragraph from the announcement:

You can choose to receive the newsletter via email or simply stay subscribed to Bloglines News, and we’ll let you know when each issue is posted.

I guess having an RSS feed for the newsletter and its contents would make too much sense.

powell’s books newsletter

Sign up for the Powell’s Books newsletter! You’ll enjoy reading it.

I love the Powell’s Books newsletter! It always has clever non-sequitors like:

“The Mystery aisle buzzed with activity. As the new Mosley book found its place between “Gone Fishin'” and “A Little Yellow Dog,” the Chandlers and Hammetts nodded with approval. Although the Ellroys and Thompsons were pleased to see another noir, the Christies kept quiet and sipped their tea.”

classics meme

I don’t normally do these things, but I was currious to see just how many of the “classics” I have read.

I don’t normally do these things, but I was currious to see just how many of the “classics” I have read. Surprisingly, I’ve read more of them than I thought, thanks to my high school’s english program. The only one I picked up on my own is The Color Purple. Call me a bad librarian, but the “classics” have never intereasted me much.

Those I’ve read are in bold, and the ones I actually enjoyed are marked with astrisks. Thanks to kgs for inspiring me to post this meme.

a wrinkle in time

“A Wrinkle In Time” has been made into a TV movie airing tomorrow evening on ABC.

This evening, NPR’s All Things Considered reported on the TV movie of the classic book A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L’Engle. It will be broadcast in the evening on ABC Monday, May 10th. I don’t have a television, but as luck would have it, I’m house sitting for someone tomorrow evening who has a television, so I may get to watch it.

what book are you?

The title says it all.

Normally, I don’t do quizes that try to peg me as one thing or another, but this one caught my eye with it’s result. Also, the quiz is only six questions with two option answers, so it’s a fast one.

You’re Stranger in a Strange Land!
by Robert Heinlein
Most people look at you and think of you as a Martian, even though you were born on Earth. Silly Earthlings, er, people. Anyway, you’ve been telling people about free love and relaxing like it’s some radical idea. Most of them want you to go back to the ’60’s (or Mars), but others are in your groove. Grok on!

This is my first attempt at refgrunting. I only work 2 hours per week at the reference desk, so it will be brief.
