The front page of my blog is empty! Well, not quite empty, but all of the posts are so old that they’ve fallen off the front page into the archives. I have a CD review that will get posted here this evening, but in the mean time I am feeling guilty about not writing in here as much as I should.
Last month was a whirlwind of travel. It began when my friends Wishing Chair arrived on the 14th for a mini-PNW tour that ended on the 17th. I went along with them. The final show was a sparsely attended house concert I organized. The venue was great, but a lot of people who would have liked to attend could not because it was Father’s Day.
After they left, I had a few days to catch my breath before speeding off to the other Washington for the first annual Where’s George? national gathering in the capitol. There were thirty or so WG? fanatics who spent most of the weekend together doing the tourist thing, swapping bills, and telling stories. On Sunday, I drove over to Harrisonburg to visit old friends. I spent a little time on my undergraduate campus and ate at two of my favorite restaurants: the Indian-American Cafe and the Little Grill. I also had a coffee and used the free wifi at the Artful Dodger. It’s gotten much darker and more martini bar-like compared to the place it was when I would see my friend Thea perform there every Wednesday night.
I returned home on Wednesday afternoon following a hellacious flight experience thanks to American Airlines, Dallas-Ft. Worth airport, and the weather. Technically, our flight landed in Seattle a little after 11pm, about two hours late, and after the last shuttle to Ellensburg. By the time they got our bags to the luggage area and I picked up mine, it was after midnight. Twenty minutes later and with $65 less in my bank account, I was fast asleep in a slightly nicer than a Motel 6 room not too far from the airport. I slept some and was able to catch the next shuttle home. My friends, I am telling you this because I care for your sanity. Do not fly through DFW unless you enjoy having delayed flights and missed connections. If fate somehow sends you to that purgatory, make sure you have at least two hours between flights in case of delays and to give you plenty of time to hoof it from opposite corners of the terminals.
Getting home in the afternoon on Wednesday meant that I had only about 48 hours to get ready for my next trip, in addition to working three full days (I stayed late Wednesday night rather than take vacation time). At least for that trip I would be driving rather than relying on flying buses. On Friday after work, I got in my car and drove to a friend’s house in Vancouver, WA. The next morning I was up early to go stand in line with friends for the Indigo Girls concert at the Oregon Zoo. It was a blast! The next morning I drove up to Seattle and did the same thing again at the Woodland Park Zoo. I also took some time to hunt down a geocache hidden in the park.
Since then things have settled down a bit. I’ve been doing some fun stuff here and there, but mainly staying at home trying to catch up with house and yard work. While I was off touring with Wishing Chair, my friend who came over to feed the cats put some flowers in my flower bed. Prior to her contribution, I had some daffodils and tulips, both of which were long dead at that point. I added another plant last week and it’s starting to look more like a real bit of gardening. I also mowed the lawn for the first time in weeks. It looks better, despite the bare patches. I’ve seeded those and used peat moss this time, so maybe I’ll have better luck with the seeds.
This is getting quite lengthy, so I’ll stop now. Thanks for reading so far. I’ll be returning to the librarian stuff eventually soon, so hang tight.
