I received this amusing forward in my email this morning:

NEW YORK (Aug. 14) – A huge power blackout hit U.S. cities spreading from New York to Cleveland and Detroit and north into Canada Thursday afternoon. In New York City, the blackout had a significant effect on the public library. None of the Internet terminals or other computers in the New York Library system were functioning, but the novels and non-fiction books somehow remained operational, according to patrons on the scene. Older reference librarians were able to switch to print sources in order to maintain services, preventing any disruption. Seekers of pornography crowded the reference desks asking for help and were referred to a list of bawdy novels and assorted men’s magazines.

Isn’t weather (in general) rather amazing? I am always reminded of how awesome nature is when She gets my attention. It is both sad and ironic that the New Rochelle Public Library may lose all city funding and be forced to close. Isn’t weather (in general) rather amazing? I am always reminded of how awesome nature is when She gets my attention.

It is both sad and ironic that the New Rochelle Public Library may lose all city funding and be forced to close. It’s sad because without public libraries, cities lose out on places of learning. It’s ironic because New Rochelle Public Library is in the Westchester Library System, under the direction of ALA President Mitch Freedman.

I rarely watch TV anymore, but when I do, it’s usually because Trading Spaces is on. Most of the time, I’m listening to public radio, whether I’m at home or in the car. So, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I heard this on the radio last night.

Jessamyn West has been elected to ALA Council! Yippee! (I voted for her – did you?)

I have added a link to Powell’s books on the left. They have a good selection, and if you purchase anything through that link, I get a commission that will go towards paying off my school debt. Alternatively, there is always Save Anna.

Kentucky is attempting to narrow the information technology gap by mandating that all new housing units funded more than 50% by the Kentucky Housing Corporation have to be wired for broadband Internet access. In this day and age, it is virtually a necessity for education that kids have access to the Internet at home. Now, even low-income kids in Kentucky have the potential to succeed as well as their peers from wealthier families.

More censorship from the warmongers. Two activists in New York were arrested and held in jail for several hours after hanging flyers with pictures of ordinary Iraqi citizens around the city.

My sister sent me a link to a website that has cute and artsy flash films about muffins. I liked “Feed Me” best of all the ones I watched.
