feeds to watch out for

From elation to depression in 2.5 seconds. Well, not really.

When I read that Jessamyn had helped Alison Bechdel set up an RSS feed for her Dykes to Watch Out For blog, I was very happy. I have the PlanetOut archive of the strip bookmarked and check it once a week or so, but to have the strip arrive via RSS would be much more functional. Sadly, my excitement turned to disappointment as I realized that the feed was for the blog, not the comic strip. And besides, it’s a Blogger blog, so it already has an Atom feed.

heavy heart

I have a heavy heart today.

I have a heavy heart today. Yesterday I let my anger dominate my rational self. I keep thinking about how appropriate the Sinfest cartoon on Monday is for the situation I find myself in now. I am still trying to figure out how I got into a place of anger, and why it continues to smolder in my heart even now that I regret having acted on it.

weeding dreams

When you can’t get far enough away from work…

I had a vivid dream last night about weeding deselecting in the QA section of books in the library. I must have been thinking too much about what I need to get done this week when I fell asleep last night. I need to evaluate and pull books to be withdrawn from the Mathematics section of the collection, as well as deselect volumes from the periodical storage area. We need the shelf space.

npr report on clark atlanta

NPR’s All Things Considered reported this evening on the closing of Clark Atlanta University’s LIS program.

NPR’s All Things Considered reported this evening on the closing of Clark Atlanta University’s LIS program. I wrote a longer commentary when word of the closing hit the librarian newslines last year.

“In a cost-cutting move, Clark-Atlanta University plans to shut down its library sciences program. The program is one of only two in the nation at historically black colleges and universities, and since 1941 has graduated more black librarians than any other institution. Emily Kopp of Georgia Public Broadcasting reports.”

blogger code

What’s your blogger code?

Jumping on the meme wagon, here’s my blogger code:
B7 d t+ k+ s u- f- i- o x e l- c-

The down side of this code is that there is no automated translation, and frankly I don’t care enough to figure out what someone else’s code means. Oh… wait… I typed too soon. There is a decoder. I guess now I can go look up Karen.

Of course, a true blogger wouldn’t need translation….

marketplace feed

Public radio is catching on to the RSS feed craze.

Yesterday I discovered that one of my favorite news programs on public radio, Marketplace, has an RSS feed for their daily programs. Each story is broken down into an entry with brief descriptions. It’s not as slick as their daily newsletter email, but it’s much more functional for feed readers/aggregators.

National Public Radio (NPR) already has a variety of RSS feeds to choose from, including individual non-news-based programs, as well as local feeds from a handful of member stations. It’s been a while since I checked out their offerings, and I was surprised to see all of the new feeds. I ended up subscribing to several.

MT comment spam solutions

Comment spam giving you trouble? Try this.

The Digital Librarian has been comment spammed to the point of turning off comments, which is too bad, since I can’t leave a comment for a solution, so I’m writing this here.

I’ve been using a combination of CloseComments and MT-Blacklist since the begining of July, and I’ve had very few comment spams get through. In fact, I haven’t updated my Blacklist since the first part of August, and I might have had one comment spam get through (I can’t remember for sure when that happened). For anyone who has not upgraded to MovableType 3.0, this combination is one of the best for blocking comment spam.
