Jessamyn West pointed out today that she has her own Google/dmoz category. Not only that, but she has more links in her category than Ranganathan. There’s something seriously wrong with the world when one innovative, blogging, rarin’ librarian can have more links in a web directory than one of the most important theorists on classification and indexing.
Incidentally, two of the Ranganathan links are duplicates and at least one is a 404. I think I might volunteer to edit that category just to clean up the mess that is in there at the moment.
Please, please do so. When I signed on to edit that category, it was primarily to move the sites that were blogs over to the appropriate category. I have neither the time nor the willpower to maintain both categories with the necessary attention. E-mail me if you really want to do it.
I might add that I don’t really feel that most of the sites listed under Jessamyn’s heading should be there, since they are not really sites about Jessamyn, but articles, interviews, etc. However, like I said, I haven’t found the motivation to engineer a restructuring. Join the team!

Well, it’s up for debate isn’t it? Ranganathan’s category would include stuff he wrote as well as stuff written about him, wouldn’t it? Maybe it wouldn’t…. I was pretty surprised to find a category with my name attached, but then again, I’m just surprised that there aren’t more people in the library field with large web presences [Karen Schneider comes to mind, maybe Chris Dodge] who would be there as well. The big deal about Dmoz is that it’s all volunteer. This makes it easy to make the response to any criticism “well, go volunteer and fix it yourself then!” It’s sort of the analog to the “if you don’t vote, don’t complain” maxim. I’d like to see the librarian category have more people in it, personally, so maybe I’ll volunteer and try to do just that. In point of fact I’ll probably ruminate over it some more and not so much but you raise an interesting point that I’ve always wondered about: Why isn’t there more Ranganathan online??
